An annual clean and inspection should be done on your solar system to keep it preforming at optimum levels. But I would recommend visually checking the solar panels and any sign of debris or anything that will effect the performance. When cleaning the panels do not use any harsh chemicals, a soft bush and some water is all that is required. Placing panels in a north-facing direction is optimal, however placing panels on a west or east facing roof will still produce a substantial amount of power. In New Zealand, panels will not perform well if they face to the south. The tilt angle is also  important to maximise the energy created from your panels.
